What should leaders do when they make mistakes?

A MOMENT with GOD

David summoned the priests, Zadok and Abiathar, and these Levite leaders: Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab. He said to them, “You are the leaders of the Levite families. You must purify yourselves and all your fellow Levites, so you can bring the Ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. Because you Levites did not carry the Ark the first time, the anger of the Lord our God burst out against us. We failed to ask God how to move it properly.”

1 Chronicles 15:11-13

In this passage, David admitted that he had not prayed to God to ask for direction the first time he tried to bring the Ark to Jerusalem (see chapter 13). Even though he had conferred with the leaders of Israel, he had not asked God how and when they should move the Ark. This mistake resulted in a fatal tragedy with the death of Uzzah. David is a good example to any leader who has made an error. A leader’s honest and frank admission of his or her mistakes is the only way to recover from errors in judgment. It helps the entire community to learn from the mistake, and it inspires people to admit their own mistakes to each other as well.
