How is a leader also a mentor?

A MOMENT with GOD

Moses and his assistant Joshua set out, and Moses climbed up the mountain of God.

Exodus 24:13

Inside the Tent of Meeting, the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting.

Exodus 33:11

You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.

2 Timothy 2:2

[Jesus said,] “When the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

John 14:26

A mentoring relationship has the specific formula of one person teaching and another person learning. Good mentors commit to building a relationship with someone who is younger or has less life experience. Through this relationship, a mentor shares wisdom, life experiences, and support with the goal of helping the mentee learn and grow. Moses and Joshua are an example of an effective mentoring relationship. First, Moses oversaw Joshua’s active involvement in the work God gave them. Second, Moses welcomed Joshua into his own spiritual arena, even allowing Joshua to be with him during his most significant experiences with God. This created divine moments of spiritual growth. Then, when Moses died, it was clear that Joshua was prepared to assume responsibility as a faithful, fully equipped, credible leader. Leaders don’t live forever, but the work of the Lord must continue from generation to generation. Mentoring ensures that continuation of God’s work. The Holy Spirit is our ultimate spiritual mentor. It is through the Holy Spirit that Jesus helps us build a relationship with God and guides us into wisdom, maturity, and understanding.
