How does overcoming doubt strengthen my faith?

A MOMENT with GOD

The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength. Therefore, tell the people, ‘Whoever is timid or afraid may leave this mountain and go home.’” So 22,000 of them went home, leaving only 10,000 who were willing to fight. But the Lord told Gideon, “There are still too many! Bring them down to the spring, and I will test them to determine who will go with you and who will not.”

Judges 7:2-4

Doubt can be a trapdoor to fear, or it can be a doorway to confident faith. You may have doubts about God’s ability to help you in the face of great odds, but you decide to trust him anyway. And when he acts, your faith is strengthened. God wants you to express your faith in him before he acts. So when God calls you to do something, don’t be surprised if it seems that the obstacles are too great, as with Gideon when he faced the Midianites. This may be a test of your faith. God may be working to deepen your faith and character so you know it is really God who saves you, not your own efforts. As Gideon’s army dwindled, he realized he was no longer in charge—only God could help him now. When you are humble enough to realize that you can’t accomplish the job on your own, when you are ready to give God the credit rather than yourself, when you courageously hold on to your faith even if God calls you to do something that seems impossible—then you are in a position to see God at work, and your faith will be strengthened.
