How do I manage feelings of discontent?

God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.

2 Corinthians 9:8

All humans have basic needs that must be met in order to survive: food, water, shelter, and love. However, our needs are different from our wants. When our needs are met, we can be content and satisfied. But our wants, even when they are fulfilled, can often leave us unsatisfied, discontent, and desiring more. Wants are not always negative, but when they are different from God’s desires, they can feed the fires of jealousy, covetousness, deceit, materialism, or other sins we fall into when we become obsessed with getting what we want. Our needs often allow God to show us his power and provision and teach us that he is sufficient. Our wants often keep us from desiring and receiving God’s help because we’re too focused on our own goals.

It is essential for a leader to recognize and manage the differences between needs and wants. As you focus on meeting needs, you will learn to rely on God’s power, and you will begin to feel overall contentment. But if you are feeling generally discontented, it may be a sign that you are focusing too much on what you want, which will never truly satisfy you. Focus instead on discovering what God knows that you need. The more you focus on what the Lord values, the more you will be able to distinguish your wants from your needs. Turn your feelings of discontent into a divine moment, shifting your focus to the God who meets the needs that truly satisfy.
