Deeper Life #232

For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

—Matthew 13:15

SOME PEOPLE CLAIM TO GET converted and entirely sanctified at every camp meeting or revival meeting. They receive the Word of God with great joy, but they soon fall back into their old way of living. They are spiritually shallow because they have never had their selfish wills broken.

Stony ground is a layer of rock, covered with only a thin soil of earth. There are many people like this.

What’s the trouble? They have never had the soil of their wills broken; they have not gone to the bottom of their spirits. Jesus says many people will bless God for the truth and receive it with gladness; but when persecution arises, they are offended.

Prayer Thought: Break my stubborn will, Lord Jesus, and have Your holy way in all I do and say.
