Determined Faith

And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God.

Job 19:26

The story of a famous man reads like this: chapter 1, he’s wealthy and prosperous; chapter 2, he loses everything (even his children and his health); chapter 42, he is more prosperous than in chapter 1. Wouldn’t you like to know what happened from chapters 3 through 41?

If so, you should read the story of Job, that prosperous patriarch of the Old Testament who had it all, lost it all, and got it all back in the end—doubled. You’ll be blessed by reading his story in Scripture; but here’s the word that summarizes Job’s return to prosperity: determination. When Job lost everything, everyone around him tried to convince him to give up on God and give up on himself.

But Job had a determined faith—he knew God was just and fair. He wasn’t about to give up on God or throw in the towel on his own faith just because he was stuck in a place he didn’t understand. In the end, God met with Job, explained as much as he needed to know, and restored his health, family, and fortune.

If you’re stuck in a place you don’t understand right now, don’t give up—on God or yourself. Faith that throws in the towel today won’t have one to wave in victory tomorrow.
