At dusk, dawn, and noon I sigh deep sighs—he hears, he rescues. (Ps. 55:17 MSG)

When was the last time you let out a deep sigh of contentment?

When Amy sits next to me, sometimes she sighs out of frustration—you know, like, “There he goes again, just being a guy.” Other times, she snuggles in close and lets out a sigh of contentment, of closeness and security, of connection and intimacy. Obviously, I prefer the second kind of sigh from her, and I know that sometimes I experience a similar feeling in God’s presence.

When I pray and open my heart to him, I don’t have to be strong and have all the answers. He already knows my weaknesses and limitations better than I do, so I don’t have to pretend to have things figured out or to be in control. I can just relax and let my soul breathe, resting in the fullness of his presence, secure in my knowledge of who he is and how much he loves me.

You can enjoy this same sense of security and contentment as you talk to your Father. When you rest in just being his child and acknowledge that he loves you enough to die for you, then you don’t have to rely on circumstances, achievements, or addictive substances for satisfaction. You can simply relax, knowing you are loved by the one who created you.
