Daily Power #235

Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the LORD. (Ps. 134:2)

Throughout history, uplifted hands have usually signaled one of two things. First, they’re used to indicate victory. You’re at a sporting event, and even if you’re not religious, if your team scores the winning goal, touchdown, or basket, then what do you do? You pump your fists in the air, high-five all those sitting nearby, and cheer until you’re hoarse. One time I went to an Oklahoma City Thunder game, and my hands were up and down so much I was sore the next day. When you’re winning, you raise your hands in triumph.

However, if someone jumps out in front of you in a dark alley and puts a gun in your face, the gesture is the same, but the meaning conveys almost the exact opposite. You say, “Don’t shoot! I surrender.” Raised hands, especially with your palms forward, indicate that you won’t resist. Instead of balling your hands into fists, blocking your face, and preparing to fight, upraised hands signal your willingness to give in.

When you raise your hands, it can mean victory or it can mean surrender. However, in the presence of God, it means both, simultaneously. At the exact moment when you surrender to him, then you find victory in him. Remember that with God, submitting to him is the greatest victory you’ll ever experience.

Lord, today I raise my hands and yield to you, but I also praise you for loving me so much that you were willing to die on the cross. Thank you, Jesus.
