Creator, Father, King #13

You must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.

DO YOU EVER WISH you could be in more than one place at once?

Think of everything you could accomplish! You could finish your homework, do your chores, play video games at a friend’s house, compete in your soccer team’s championship game, and enjoy a European vacation—all at the same time!

Or what if you could see the past, present, and future simultaneously? Imagine the knowledge and the power you’d have! You could see the lives of your entire family tree, stretching back into antiquity. You could potentially stop accidents before they’d happen. You could know who wins every major sporting event from now until the Lord returns!

Alas, this is wishful thinking. Humans are finite creatures, bound by the laws of space and time.

But God isn’t.

What’s It Mean?

As the eternal Creator, God made space and time. They exist because of his will, and he rules over them.

We can only be in one place at one time. But God is not limited in this way. In Jeremiah 23:24, God asks rhetorically, “Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?”

Since God is a spirit (John 4:24), he is also not restricted by spatial constraints. We measure ourselves by height and weight. God doesn’t have a size. Second Chronicles 2:6 says, “Who can really build him a worthy home? Not even the highest heavens can contain him!”

Time is also a servant, not a master, of the Lord God Almighty. He doesn’t have to squint or crane his neck to see into the future or look at old photos to remember the past. He sees all time—including every moment of human history—at once with perfect clarity (see today’s verse) because he created and governs it.

Is your head spinning? That’s okay. These are deep, fascinating truths that stretch our understanding and proclaim God’s incomparable glory. Praise him!

Now What?

Now is a good time to worship the God who transcends space and time! A few good passages to meditate on are Psalm 139:7-10 (God’s omnipresence) and Isaiah 46:9-10 (God’s unique power over time).

Did You Know?

When Jesus, the eternal Son of God, incarnated into human form, he willingly subjected himself to spatial dimensions—only being able to be in one place at any given time—to become our great High Priest (Hebrews 2:17).
