Be still, and know that I am God!

• WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T LISTEN TO THE NEWS TODAY!
• DON’T TURN ON THE TV!
• DON’T SCROLL THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA!
• DON’T PICK UP A NEWSPAPER!

At least, don’t do any of those things if you want to avoid negative headlines and discouraging stories.

This world is a crazy, messed-up place. Ever since sin entered the picture, the human experience has been filled with sadness, suffering, and death.

Sometimes, it can feel like life is coming apart, at least if you read the national and international headlines. All over the world, people are treating each other savagely. We shouldn’t be surprised at this. It’s the effects of the Fall.

Psalm 46 describes this through several powerful metaphors: trembling earthquakes, crumbling mountains, roaring oceans! “The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble” (verse 6).

It’s easy to be shaken at the world’s volatility. But the Creator of heaven and earth calls us to respond in faith.

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world” (verse 10).

What’s It Mean?

Stillness.

It’s not something we’re accustomed to anymore in this fast-paced age. But when chaos reigns around us, there’s nothing better to do than quiet our lives, humble our hearts, and listen to God.

Psalm 46, especially God’s personal command above, is a beautiful reminder of his sovereign rule over all creation. Sin might be wreaking havoc in the world, but there is complete peace in heaven. The Lord “is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble” (verse 1).

You can be still in God. You can trust his goodness, be assured of his power, and rest in his love. He has things completely in control.

How? you ask. It sure doesn’t look like it from down here.

That’s because we only see the here and now. Our knowledge is finite, our sight is myopic, and our strength is limited. God is transcendent. He sees eternity all at once (see the January 13 devotion). The universe is spread out before him like a map. He will accomplish all of his purposes for the glory of his name and the good of his chosen people.

Be still and know that he is God!

Get into the habit of pausing to pray whenever breaking news causes you concern.
