For Unnecessary Battles
For Unnecessary Battles
HAVE YOU HEARD of a Pyrrhic victory? It’s a victory that comes at such a debilitating cost, it’s essentially a defeat. The term originally referred to the Greek general Pyrrhus of Epirus. In the third century BC, he battled the Roman Empire and won. But in the process of fighting, Pyrrhus lost his best officers and friends.
There’s no doubt that some battles are necessary, but I’d venture to say that most are not. For instance, the second someone mentions politics, I know that I’d better pray—because some silly battle is about to start! And you probably have a “way-too-sensitive” hot button that’s provoked by something (or someone) else.
Through prayer, God teaches us when and how to chill. Second Timothy 2:23-24 instructs us, “Refuse to get involved in inane discussions; they always end up in fights. God’s servant must not be argumentative, but a gentle listener and a teacher who keeps cool” (MSG).
Therefore, pray when you’re lured into foolish battles—because losing your peace and reputation are too high a cost.
STRENGTH IN THE WORD
Pray that you will not give in to temptation.
TODAY I DECLARE
I’ll count the costs.
PRAYERFUL THOUGHTS
Dear Lord,
I’ve had many Pyrrhic victories—wins that weren’t worth the fight. But now I’m asking that you remove all that nonsense from my life.
Please cool down my hot buttons, O Lord, and reshape me into a person who isn’t provoked. Give me ears that can listen to anything without hopping into the flames of a fight.
Help me count the cost of potential battles—and teach me when and how to chill.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
KEEPSAKE
