For Saying the Right Words

SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME, women have possessed the power to save and destroy; build up and tear down; start wars and facilitate peace. We accomplished some of these mighty feats through the sheer influence of our words.

This isn’t go-girl feminist talk; it’s go-girl Bible talk. The Word of God teaches that a woman’s words have power. Wasn’t it Delilah’s tongue that ruined Samson, and Abigail’s words that spared Nabal from David’s sword? “Thank God for your good sense!” David said to Abigail. “I have heard what you said” (1 Samuel 25:33, 35).

God has given women the power of influence—which is yet another reason to pray. “A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything. . . . By our speech we can ruin the world, [and] turn harmony to chaos” (James 3:5-6, MSG). With that level of influence, we would be remiss not to pray for the right words to say.

STRENGTH IN THE WORD

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt.

TODAY I DECLARE

I will prayerfully wield my influence.

PRAYERFUL THOUGHTS

Dear Lord,

Thank you for making me a woman of influence. I humbly accept the responsibility that comes with that power.

Please anchor my tongue with the weight of grace and compassion; and may my words be like sweet honey that comforts souls. Help me touch lives with the right words, at the right time, and with the right tone. Guide everything that I say, O Lord.
