For Growing beyond Failure

FAILURE IS A VITAL PART OF SUCCESSFUL ENGINEERING. The sinking of the Titanic, the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the crumbling of the World Trade Center—each of these catastrophes taught engineers how to avoid future mistakes.

It’s called a failure analysis—the process of studying why a failure occurred and how to avoid it in the future. It’s hard to overlook the spiritual similarities. Proverbs 24:16 teaches, “The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.” However, ignoring, blame shifting, or tripping over the same mistake is plain foolishness.

Similar to the world of engineering, the Kingdom of God requires that we analyze and learn from our failures. Turning a blind eye (because of shame and denial) leads only to future catastrophes. The sinking of the Titanic prompted lifesaving regulations, and our failures can lead to stronger boundaries, healthier relationships, and wiser decisions. Failure is a growth opportunity—and a critical part of future success.

Dear Lord,

Help me to celebrate the lessons that come from failure, and give me the strength to grow beyond the disappointment and shame.

Focus my heart on gained experience and acquired wisdom, because without them, there can be no growth.
