For Distractions

For Distractions

IF YOU WERE TO LIST THE DISTRACTIONS in your life, the lineup would probably include things like social media, text messages, emails, and phone calls. But a distraction is anything that takes our eyes off Jesus. So an accurate list would also include worry, fear, and strife.

Remarkably, the average person spends more than five years of their life worrying, according to a study conducted by the health-care provider Benenden Health. That means worrying is a serious distraction. But God told Moses, “Speak to the People of Israel. Tell them [not to] get distracted by everything you feel or see” (Numbers 15:39, MSG).

In 1868, the French artist Gustave Doré painted a beautiful depiction of Daniel in the lions’ den. The painting shows the prophet looking up—focused on God—while surrounded by lions. Throughout our lives, we’ll similarly be encircled by circumstances that threaten to turn our gaze away from the Lord; but pray for the strength to “keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions” (Proverbs 4:25, MSG).

STRENGTH IN THE WORD

I will . . . fix my eyes on your ways.

Psalm 119:15, ESV

TODAY I DECLARE

The Lord deserves my attention.

PRAYERFUL THOUGHTS

Dear Lord,

If life were about doing things my way, I would ask that every distraction be removed. But everything—from my phone to my mood—is a potential distraction. So whatever adjustment needs to happen, please make that change within me.

Redirect my gaze, O Lord, and help me to look straight ahead. Fix my eyes on you—the God who is above all things.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

KEEPSAKE
