For Exploring Your Ministry

EVERY BELIEVER IS CALLED to spread the gospel. Although we’re not all missionaries or Sunday school teachers, we were each created to minister in a unique way. Romans 12:6 teaches, “God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.”

Harriet Powers, born a slave, became a renowned quilt maker. With no formal training, she created Bible-quilt masterpieces, including one that is owned by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

Harriet used her extraordinary appliqué and piecework techniques to weave biblical scenes. Her woven layers of storytelling include a depiction of the Garden of Eden; Jacob’s dream; the Crucifixion; Judas and the thirty pieces of silver; the Last Supper; and many others. In an early twentieth-century article (published by The Outlook magazine), Harriet stated that she made her quilts “to preach the Gospel in patchwork.”

Similarly, God has called you to share the gospel—possibly in an unconventional way. Harriet ministered through quilts, so maintain an open mind while exploring your unique, God-given approach.

Dear Lord,

Before I was born, you knew me, and you declared that I would be a light in this world. So, Lord, show me how I’m called to minister—to my family, to my community, and to those who are lost. Please point out my strongest gifts and open my mind to untapped possibilities.

Unveil how I can spread the gospel in a unique and impactful way.
