For Considering Adoption

BY THE TIME THIS BOOK IS RELEASED, I’ll be forty years old. That is, forty, never married, and without kids. There’s a panic button that goes off when a woman hits a certain age, and it rings louder when she’s not yet a mom. But God has been so good, because I’ve always had this peaceful certainty: A woman doesn’t have to give birth to be a mother.

Adoption is both a gift and a ministry. It also requires considerable prayer. Inviting God into the process will help you discern whether adopting is the right choice. Plus, it will keep you strong and reveal subconscious motives.

Ephesians 1:5 is a beautiful reminder of God’s decision to adopt us: “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”

So seek the Lord, my sister, if you’re longing to be an adoptive mom. Follow your heart, and bring along wisdom.

The Lord will give me the desires of my heart.

PRAYERFUL THOUGHTS

Dear Lord,

Like Sarah, Rachel, and Hannah—and many other sisters of the faith—I long to be a mother. If it’s your will, O Lord, please open the door to adoption, and give me divine favor with everyone involved.

May your Spirit handpick my precious child, and anoint me to be his or her mother.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
