Give Me Feedback

reproof - Give Me Feedback

Whoever heeds correction is honored. Proverbs 13:18, NIV

Dan was complaining to his wife, Audrey: “I just don’t feel close to God. I feel like I do all the right things—perfect Sunday attendance, tithing, and membership on several church committees—but it gets me nowhere. When I pray, I’m not sure He really listens.”

Audrey lovingly responded, “Dan, close relationships are built by spending lots of time getting to know each other. Two of the best ways I know to do that with God are consistent time spent in Bible study and in prayer. I’ve been thinking about this too. You know, I wait to have a devotional time with the Lord until chores are done, dinner is over, and the kids are in bed. By that time I’m totally wiped out. I barely have a coherent thought left for the Lord. I think He deserves more than that.”

Audrey continued, “As far as spending time in prayer, I heard our ladies’ Bible study teacher put it this way: God wants us to share our hearts with Him. He doesn’t just want to hear our wish lists or complaints. God wants to spend time being with us, hanging out with us. He wants us to get to know Him, like He completely knows us. He desires our thanks and our praise. He desires our attentiveness and respect.”

Lord, help me to receive feedback from my spouse with an open heart.

Dan and Audrey spent a few minutes discussing their perspectives and needed changes. Dan finally concluded, “I think I’m beginning to get it. My attitude needs to change from what can I get from God to what can I give to Him. He’s given me so much already, how can I not express my gratitude?”

Audrey thanked Dan for his receptive heart and praised him for his willingness to receive feedback. Dan was grateful for the loving reproof.
