I (Teresa) teach a seminar titled “Basic Needs of a Man.” One point I make in this seminar is this: Men have a basic, God-given need to be the leader in the home.

I’ll never forget giving this talk in a large retreat setting. An older woman asked what she should do if her husband wouldn’t lead. I asked her, “Are you willing to be led?” Her blank expression and awkward silence told me “No,” and I asked her to meet with me privately after the conference.

I listened to this sweet lady tell me about the many years of frustration and irritation with her husband. After I had comforted her and shared my compassion with her, we sat in silence for a few moments. Once again she asked me, “But what do I do if my husband won’t lead?” I asked a second time, “Does your husband sense that you are willing to accept his leadership? Are you ready to tell him you will start letting him be a leader in your home?” At that, she turned her back on me and walked out the door. Her answer to my question was clear.

We all desire to have our needs met, but sometimes we don’t want to do our part. God tells us that He looks favorably upon the humble and the lowly. He looks favorably on the ones who are willing to be led, the ones who know they are in need and look to Him to meet that need. But God sees those who are proud and unwilling to be led from a distance. They will never see His face or enjoy His provision.

That’s a scary place and a place I never want to be.
