He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.

Titus 3:5

We use the word mercy without truly understanding its meaning. According to Google.com, mercy means “compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm.” Because we live a life of sin, choosing our own way over God’s ways, we deserve judgment. And God, who dwells in brilliant light, has the authority to enact that judgment.

It’s within his power and right to judge your actions along with your motivations. But Titus 3:5 reminds you of something extraordinary: God didn’t save you because he felt sorry for you. Nor did he save you because you did great things to deserve it. No, he saved you from judgment solely because his nature is mercy and love.

God’s very essence is compassion and forgiveness, and those traits form the basis of his mercy. This is the gift he wants to give you today and always. Whatever sin is burdening you, take note of this: God’s mercy is available to you in full measure today.

Lord, I’m amazed at your mercy. Shower me with it today, amen.
