But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.

Luke 2:51

Imagine if Mary, the mother of Jesus, had had Instagram! She could have shared pictures of the Son of Man every single moment of his anointed life, starting at the manger. Instead, though, Mary did something quite the opposite. Instead of sharing with the world everything on her mind, she instead thought deeply about every moment, undoubtedly hoping to sear each into her heart and mind.

That’s what treasure is for, not for trumpeting but for cherishing. Imagine all the wonders Mary experienced. She could’ve built quite a Twitter presence, but even if she’d had the technology, I think she would have held back. She shared intimate secrets only with her God. Perhaps aware that sharing them would cheapen them, Mary chose to treasure every experience.

We would do well to follow her countercultural example. Instead of rushing to post our every experience and thought, we might find it more satisfying to pull away from technology, draw near to God, and spend some time with him.

Lord, I choose today to treasure evidence of your goodness to me rather than instantly report it, amen.
