“Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:7

We live in a distracted world. Its shiny things attract us while we’re serving the Lord, raising kids, or working to pay bills. The world’s noise makes it tough for us to hear God’s voice. Yet these two activities—listening to God and being focused on him—are critical for Christ followers.

To hear God we must pull away from this crazy world and be quiet. The beautiful thing about this need to pull away is that it doesn’t take much time or effort. You can, for example, drive in a silent car where you can listen for the Lord to speak to you.

Once we’ve been encouraged and directed by God’s voice, we can then choose to focus on exactly what he would have us focus on. He is pleased when we choose to do the specific things he asks us to do rather than wavering or flitting from here to there.

Lord, I want to hear your voice with clarity and then obey it with energy and joy, amen.
