Beautiful Word Devotional #262

“I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”

2 Samuel 7:13

Did you know that fifteen years passed between the prophet Samuel anointing David king of Israel and his finally sitting on the throne?

When the kingdom came to him, David didn’t rule perfectly. In one gigantic lapse into sin, he committed both adultery and murder, and the aftermath of that sin marred the remaining years of David’s kingship. In total, David reigned for forty years. Clearly—from a human perspective—his throne didn’t last forever.

Yet in today’s verse the Lord—speaking through the prophet Samuel—told of establishing a king who will reign forever. God was referring to Jesus’ eventual and eternal throne. Jesus was born in the family line of David, and, like David, Jesus had to wait to be king. But unlike David, Jesus did not sin, and unlike David, Jesus will reign forever.

And, as a follower of Jesus, you are now part of his glorious and eternal kingdom.

Lord, thank you for being the perfect King and for welcoming me into your kingdom, amen.
