“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

John 10:10

When Jesus talked about the thief, he used vivid images to describe the work of Satan. After all, Satan’s main goal on earth is to trip up believers. He wants to steal our hope, murder our spirits, and destroy our testimonies.

We should not underestimate the strength or the variety of our enemy’s ways.

At the same time, we should not overestimate them either.

Today’s verse, uttered by Jesus, reminds us that he is far more powerful than the devil: Satan’s attempts to “steal and kill and destroy” will be overpowered by Jesus’ ability to give life.

Yes, it’s true that you have a very real enemy—but it’s also wonderfully true that you have a God who is bigger and stronger than that enemy, a God who is capable of giving you a life overflowing with his joy, peace, and love.

Lord, thank you that you are more powerful than my enemy. And I thank you even more that you give me life that is abundant in your joy and peace, and love, amen.
