Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?

1 Corinthians 15:55

In talking about the resurrection and Jesus’ power over death, Paul shared these two rhetorical questions originally asked in the Old Testament. These questions had remained relevant, and now—after the death and resurrection of Jesus—everyone could know the definitive answers:

Where is death’s victory? It is gone.

Where is death’s sting? It no longer exists.

Why doesn’t death have power over us? Because Jesus vanquished death, conquering it through his resurrection. Forgiven and cleansed of our sins, we now have access to God, to his presence and his power, and to eternal life with him in heaven.

So, when you walk through the valley of the shadow of death with a loved one, keep these truths in mind. Death will be sad, but its sting has been removed. Death may seem like the victor, but only for a moment.

Lord, thank you for conquering death so I no longer have to be afraid of it or of what follows it, amen.
