If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand.

Daniel 3:17

The most powerful statement in this story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego comes in the next verse. Here, in verse 17, they assert God’s power, but in verse 18, they praise and affirm God’s sovereignty as well as submit to it. They say—paraphrased—“But even if God doesn’t save us, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”

“But even if he doesn’t.”

Yes, God can deliver you. But you cannot know the entirety of his plan. Sometimes your story will involve pain. When that’s the case, you can still confidently say, “My God is strong. He is able to deliver me,” and then, in the next breath, declare your loyalty: “But even if he doesn’t.”

Maybe you’re facing something like that right now. Rest in knowing God has a plan even if circumstances are fiery.

Lord, I want to declare, “But even if you don’t!” Give me the faith to trust your sovereign rule, amen.
