“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

1 Peter 2:24

We often read about Jesus dying on the cross, yet the impact of that act can be lost on us. What does it mean that Jesus bore our sins “in his body”? Consider this: Think of all the sins you have forgiven and know you need to forgive. Then see those sins tattooed across Jesus’ shoulders: slander, malice, hatred, and harsh words.

Now consider your sins. Tattoo those on Jesus’ shoulders too. Remember: Jesus didn’t just bear those words; he took on the responsibility for the actual acts. He experienced abandonment. He heard words of betrayal.

All this Jesus did for you. His wounds—caused by the sins of everyone—are the means of your healed relationship with God, with your holy heavenly Father. It’s an astounding thought. And it’s the kind of truth that will set you free. Why? Because you are that loved.

Lord, thank you for bearing my sins on the cross so I can be in a relationship with you, amen.
