Beautiful Word Devotional #188

“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.”

John 15:18

When we are walking in obedience to Jesus, we must expect pushback. When we love others with abandon, give with generosity, and tell the truth without hesitation, we will encounter hate in various forms. Here, Jesus reminded his disciples that he had been hated. Because he was hated, we can find help from him when we are hated. Jesus knows what it’s like. He empathizes.

Not only that, but when we suffer for doing what is right, when we are persecuted because of our commitment to the gospel, we are sharing in Jesus’ sufferings “in order that we may also share in his glory” (see Romans 8:17). Persecution and hatred may therefore mean that we’re shining God’s light in the darkness of this world.

Whenever you’re experiencing this kind of hate, learn the art of rejoicing despite it. The hate may be confirming that the Lord is obviously alive in you!

Oh, Jesus well understands your situation. He will comfort you and enable you to endure.

Lord, I don’t like to be hated. It hurts. Empower me to love even when I am hated, amen.
