“My Father will honor the one who serves me.”

John 12:26

Our culture tends to honor people who serve themselves, who, for instance, climb to the top of the corporate ladder without caring about whom they step on to get there. Ours is a world of self-serving people, and our culture rewards selfishness. .

So when Jesus talked to his disciples (and to us) about serving him, Jesus was issuing a countercultural mandate. He was telling us to not step on others, not see people as obstacles, and not serve ourselves.

Instead, we are to serve Jesus who modeled such service for us. He didn’t come to be served; he came to serve others. He chose to consider other people as more important than himself. He washed feet. He listened to people. He valued the downtrodden and accepted them.

As you follow in Jesus’ steps—as you honor him by serving others—Jesus will honor you. Now, though, savor the fact that you are pleasing your Lord and glorifying him with your selflessness, your obedience, and your servant’s heart.

Lord, show me each day whom to serve, enable me to serve well, and may you receive the glory, amen.
