You’ve Got to Have a Quarterback

Many sports analysts and pundits have declared that to have a successful NFL team, you’ve got to have a quarterback. There are between 96 and 128 quarterbacks at any given time in the National Football League, if you count through the third string and the practice-squad players. I would assume that there is a large number of available quarterbacks that teams can sign off the street every year as well. Having a good quantity of quarterbacks to play the position isn’t the problem. The problem is with having quality quarterbacks.

Just as the pundits say, “You’ve got to have a good quarterback,” I would say that every young boy and girl truly needs a great father. It’s easy to become a father. The problem isn’t quantity. There are plenty of dads out there. The challenge before us is quality. Dads who get it—who lay down their lives for their children, who understand their responsibility, and who are present and accounted for in the lives of their children and family—are the dads we need. Quality dads are desperately needed today if we are going to have a chance as a family, a community, and a nation.

Second Samuel 13:21 states, “When King David heard what had happened, he was very angry.” This verse is describing how David felt when he heard bad reports about his children. David did a lot of things well, but he struggled mightily as a father. The problem I see in 2 Samuel 13 is that David didn’t do anything to deal with his children’s actions. Don’t be that father! Be in your kids’ lives for the good and bad, thick and thin. Your children deserve a quality father.
