Coldcocked Jets Face Another Hurdle

Headlines like the one above rolled off the presses the day after a Jets backup linebacker broke the jaw of their starting quarterback, Geno Smith, in 2015. When IK Enemkpali sucker punched Smith at training camp, the consequences were immediate. Smith’s jaw was broken in two places, which resulted in undergoing surgery and sitting out for nearly ten weeks. Enemkpali was immediately released from the team, potentially ending his time in the National Football League. For Jets fans the consequences of another setback led Sports Illustrated’s Peter King to say, “It’s always something with the Jets.”^a

Like organizations whose cultures suffer repeatedly, families and individuals are often plagued with setback and scandal as well. Trouble seems to have a way of finding certain folks over and over again, as if they stumble into it.

Proverbs 27:12 states, “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” We would do well to heed this advice.

If you don’t know how to spot danger, turn to the beginning point of wisdom and embrace the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:7 states, “Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Once you see danger on the horizon, don’t go blindly on. Take precautions and make preparations so that you don’t suffer unduly. When it is time to act, you will be ready.
