You’ve Got To Get Up

You’ve Got to Get Up

When former Apprentice winner Bill Rancic interviewed Peyton Manning, he asked, “What was the hardest hit you ever received while playing in the NFL?” Manning, without hesitation, recalled how he was hit repeatedly by one player in particular, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis. Manning laughingly reflected on the way that Lewis would use Manning’s shoulders as a way to help himself up while whispering in his ear, “I’ll be back in a few minutes, punk.”

Rancic followed up by asking, “Do you let them know that they hurt you?” Manning responded, “You can’t. You’ve got to get up. If they know that they have hurt you, they will come back and do it again.” Manning made the decision before he ever took the field that if he got knocked down, he was going to get back up. In the moment, while lying on the turf, Manning had to manage that decision to get back up.

In business, marriage, finances, or in relationships, getting up when you get knocked down is mission critical if you are to go anywhere in life. Life has a way of knocking you down, but living a life pleasing to the Lord carries a promise with it. Proverbs 24:16 gives us this assurance: “The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.”

Make a decision in advance to get up when you get knocked down, and then manage that decision because you have already made it. Remember, as Peyton Manning recalls, “You’ve got to get up,” and as the Bible promises, “The godly . . . will get up again.”

The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.
