When Opportunity Knocks, Walk This Way

When opportunity knocks, how do you know where to go? Do you stay in your current situation or go to another place of employment? Do you uproot your family, or do you deepen your roots right where you are?

How do you know where to go and when to go? I don’t believe there is an easy answer to that question. But I do know that you can have confidence when you arrive at your answer. Proverbs 2:9 says, “Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go.”

We want to know what is right, just, and fair, as well as the right way to go, don’t we? But did you notice that the verse starts with the word then? It doesn’t simply say, “You will know.” It says, “Then you will know.”

When will we know the right way to go? I have come to conclude that it is after we have done the heavy lifting of looking for wisdom, as described before this verse, in Proverbs 2:1-8. This section of Scripture depicts a true search as if one is a student who is eager to learn, a pirate who is digging for buried treasure, or a lost person who is desperate to find directions. These verses describe an aggressive hunt for the answer.

Having had to walk in this uncertainty myself, here is what I have come to discover. Whether you stay or go, deepen your roots or chart a new course, God wants to use the opportunities before you to strengthen your relationship with him. After he gives you wisdom through your search, “Then you will understand. . . .”

Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go.
