What It Takes to Win

Championship dynasties like the San Antonio Spurs, the San Francisco 49ers, and the New York Yankees amaze me with their ability to continually compete for championships. Through the years, these clubs have consistently been competing for national titles. It is truly amazing what people can accomplish when working together.

For anything great to last, it must have strong leadership and a system that sustains it. The quality that keeps these championship teams competing for the title year after year is the leader’s awareness that things change and that what was true last season isn’t necessarily true this season. Additionally, the leader must create a system to take direction and input from others. He must be humble enough to know that sometimes his subordinates see clearer and further than he does.

Whether you’re thinking of your challenges in the marketplace, in marriage, in church, or in parenting, note these words of Solomon: “The wise are mightier than the strong, and those with knowledge grow stronger and stronger. So don’t go to war without wise guidance; victory depends on having many advisers” (Proverbs 24:5-6). Victory in any area of your life comes with the manifold wisdom of a broad, diverse team. It comes when they challenge you, share from their experience, or bring faith and inspiration to the group. Do you have wise counselors around you? If not, why not? Remember, even Solomon, the wisest man in the Bible, needed advice.
