Vowing To Stay The Course
Vowing to Stay the Course
It happens all too often in my life. I start out strong, motivated to lose weight and get moving. Somewhere along the way, I get stressed, busy, and hungry. I fail to prepare for the day, and I sabotage my diet. That day gets parlayed into a few days, and the next thing I know, I have gone a month, not caring or thinking about what I put into my body.
When I start the journey back, I eagerly go for a run or step on the elliptical machine, only to get three-fourths of the way through and ponder quitting. At this point, it is time to have a hard talk with myself. When that moment creeps up, I say to myself, “Roger, if you quit before you are done, you are finished.” Seeing quitting as failure is a truth I must grasp, lest I ride the yo-yo of weight gain and loss the rest of my life. Though I am tempted to quit, I need to vow to stay the course.
In biblical times, people often made vows to God. These weren’t regulated and required, but they were voluntary choices people made because of their faith in the Lord and their hopes for this life. In essence, they made the decision once and then stewarded that decision every day. What vow do you need to make to God? Mine involves the way I steward my weight. When you do make that vow, remember the words of Psalm 61:8, which states, “I will sing praises to your name forever as I fulfill my vows each day.”
I will sing praises to your name forever as I fulfill my vows each day.
