There’s Got to Be More Than This

In a November 6, 2005, interview with 60 Minutes, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said, “Man, I’m making more money now than I thought I could ever make playing football. Why do I have three Super Bowl rings and still think there is something greater out there for me? . . . It’s got to be more than this.” Has your soul ever exposed itself in a similar way? Have you wondered if there is anything more to life? If accomplishments are the goal and prize, then you will end up with a great résumé but still feel empty. What is the key ingredient that is missing? What should the broader goal of your accomplishments be? We are to live for God’s glory. When we live with our purpose in mind instead of living with his purpose as our aim, we come up short and lack lasting fulfillment.

Jesus spoke of the full and abundant life that is available to his followers. In John 10:10, Jesus said, “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” Other translations call it the abundant life. Don’t confuse it with having lots of stuff. Instead, think of it as life with purpose, definition, and clarity for why you do what you do.

This abundant life begins at the Cross, where you discover your true value to God. It develops when you realize that God’s purpose for your life is to glorify him in all you do. And it extends into eternity, where all things are made new. Begin to enjoy the abundant life by coming to God and allowing your purpose to be informed by his.

My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
