The Power Of Habits

The Power of Habits

Have you ever heard a quarterback talk about not remembering the second half of a football game? In its former days, the NFL didn’t have the concussion protocols in place that it does today. As a result, teams would often run their players back out to the field for more of the same.

As concussion awareness has heightened, former players have begun talking about those moments when they just went out and performed, although everything was a blur. Quarterbacks have gone so far as to say that they have no memories of the rest of the game, but they just went out and did what they had been doing for years.

The many repetitions of three-, five-, and seven-step drops kicked in and took over when it was time to throw a pass. Their habitual practices served them as their subconscious minds did what their conscious minds were unable to.

It is amazing how deep our daily practices go into our lives. Some have speculated that up to 40 percent of our daily activities are performed out of habit. If this is the case, we ought to consider our ways to know that they are serving us well. Proverbs 4:26 states, “Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.”

What are some of the habits that you have that you know aren’t profitable? Are there practices that you engage in today that five years ago weren’t tolerated? Consider the areas of alcohol, social media, and sexually explicit material. Have any of these taken hold so that you consistently find yourself regretting your conduct? Let your patterns serve you well by making a straight path for your feet.

Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.
