The Two-minute Drill

The Two-Minute Drill

In the foreword of Bum Phillips’s biography, former Houston Oiler tight end Mike Barber says, “All of us come to a place and time when the clock is running out, it’s the fourth quarter and we find ourselves about to make the biggest call of our life. That’s when we find we need a coach.”a

I haven’t always seen the clock or known it was the fourth quarter, but the pressures of life have let me know when I’ve needed a coach. A “life coach” is a wise person who, like a sage, can teach in just a few words the applicable lessons that last us a lifetime.

This isn’t the first time I have addressed this subject in A Minute of Vision for Men. But the Bible often repeats itself too. Good coaches glean from their experience and see beyond what is right before them. When we begin to visit with them about our struggles, our experiences, and our options, they often are able to hone in and diagnose the problem clearly. They are like an expert physician who can make a diagnosis over the phone, call in a prescription, and then say, “Now come see me tomorrow to confirm that diagnosis.”

Proverbs 10:20 states, “The words of the godly are like sterling silver.” If you feel like you are in the two-minute drill in life, look and listen for a godly person who has been where you are and has the wisdom that experience brings. Find the sage, and seek out his or her wisdom. An apt word can change everything.

The words of the godly are like sterling silver.
