The Hard Work Hall of Fame

Houston’s Christian radio station KSBJ hosted an event called “Born to Be Wild: A Man Journey” in February 2016. Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward and Super Bowl XLI champion head coach Tony Dungy were the featured guests, and Christian artist Brandon Heath led worship. Mark Merrill and Darrin Gray from All Pro Dad were a big part of the night. Because Darrin and I have established a heart connection, he invited my sons and me to join the behind-the-scenes action and attend the event.

At a VIP reception prior to the event, Coach Dungy was discussing his newly revealed acceptance into the Hall of Fame. He was excited that he was going to be inducted with one of his players, Marvin Harrison.

Dungy reflected on the uncommon work ethic of Harrison and Peyton Manning. If you have read any of Dungy’s books, you know that the word uncommon means a lot to him. He first was captured by this word when his college head coach, Cal Stoll, told his players, “Success is uncommon, therefore not to be enjoyed by the common man. I’m looking for uncommon people.” Given that Harrison, Dungy, and someday, Manning will all be inducted into the Hall of Fame, I would say that these men, through their hard work, truly are uncommon.

Notice how Scripture calls us to uncommon service to the Lord. Second Timothy 2:20-21 states, “In a wealthy home some utensils are made of gold and silver, and some are made of wood and clay. The expensive utensils are used for special occasions, and the cheap ones are for everyday use. If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.”

Today, set yourself apart for uncommon service to the Lord.
