The Greatest Gift a Father Can Give

Jim Valvano, the national champion head basketball coach from North Carolina State, once said, “My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person: he believed in me.”

I think that is the greatest thing my dad ever did for me as well. I remember that when I was a kid, he would put me to bed, and we would say my prayers. After praying, he would tell me, “Roger, you can do anything you want to in this life. Just make sure you ask God what he wants you to do, then go do that.”

It is a powerful thing for young children to hear from their fathers that they can do anything they put their minds to. Let’s release the potential of our children by truly believing in them and letting them know it. Do you need an example of how to do it? Look to the eternal Father who spoke a blessing to the eternal Son.

Matthew 3:16-17 states, “After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.’”

Do you hear the blessing of the heavenly Father? At this big moment in Jesus’ life, the Father publicly declares his love.

Now think about this. If the eternal Father chose to bless the eternal Son with his words, how much more should we as earthly fathers do the same for our children?

If you didn’t have a dad who spoke these gifts into your life, look to your heavenly Father. He thinks so highly of you that he would place his Son on the cross to pay for your sins. When you realize how much the heavenly Father believes in you, anything is possible.
