The Blessing of the Church

Some of the most generous people I have met are people who also have a lot of stuff. What I have learned about their generosity is that they use the things they have both for their enjoyment and as a way to bless others. Even with their vast amounts of possessions, they often think of others first.

As a pastor, I have been blessed by the people in my church who have been generous to so many in our city. They constantly amaze me with the way they share their time and resources: fighting human trafficking, investing in refugee communities, teaching people English, and funding our medical clinic. Their zeal for serving and giving is both refreshing and inspiring.

But what is truly humbling is seeing them meet the needs of those in our own church body. The call of our Lord is to build one another up in love. One of the ways we can do that is by sharing what we have. Yes, we enjoy what we have and rightfully so. But being openhanded and blessing our brothers and sisters in Christ is a key way to encourage them.

Galatians 6:10 states, “Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” One of the lessons I try to impart to my children is that it is often through relationships in the church that we receive blessings—not through the sports leagues or the school, but the church.

As I reflect on it again, it’s worth putting it in print: thank you, church, for the love you have demonstrated by giving freely what God has given to you.
