Searching It Out

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is how being presented with opportunities can create growth in my life. When a door opens and an opportunity presents itself, I need to know where to set my foot. My relationship with God has grown the most through seeking his guidance about these opportunities.

Proverbs 25:2 has helped me tremendously in knowing how to navigate opportunity. The verse says, “It is God’s privilege to conceal things and the king’s privilege to discover them.”

There is an old poker phrase that describes a player’s desire not to reveal his cards. This person is described as “playing it close to the vest.” Sometimes I feel that God plays it close to his vest. So often in our lives when an opportunity presents itself, we are so eager to get from point A to point B that we fail to ask God for direction and seek his will. In doing that, we miss the moments between these destinations and the opportunity to grow closer to him.

The English Standard Version translates the word privilege in this verse as “glory.” It is the idea that it is good, glorious, and beneficial for God to conceal matters. Additionally it is good, glorious, and beneficial for kings to have to search them out. You and I are the kings of this passage. We govern the affairs of our households, and sometimes our workplaces, and it is our responsibility to search God’s concealed will out.

Since this is the case, I have concluded that our Lord is just as interested in the process and the journey between these destinations as where we will end up. You see, it is the process and the journey between destinations that cultivates the growth in our lives. So God will play it close to the vest and get glory by concealing a matter, and because we have to search it out, we will benefit by having a closer relationship with him.

It is God’s privilege to conceal things and the king’s privilege to discover them.
