A Strong Cup Of Joe

A Strong Cup of Joe

Here’s an honest admission: I love my morning coffee. I like it in the midmorning and even late afternoon. Periodically, I’ll have decaf in the evening. I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was nearly thirty years old. But now, I don’t know how I could live without it. When I don’t have my morning cup of joe, I get headaches, and I am sure I am not the happiest guy to be around. But when that happens, all I know to do is push through.

There is another Joe I know who has learned how to push through. He is a third-year medical student who has struggled and overcome a tremendous amount already. He overcame a serious stuttering problem, not just once, but twice. He had to change course in college a few times. He was rejected by multiple medical schools in the United States and had to leave his family and his country to study at St. George’s in Grenada.

While visiting with his parents, I told them that Joe is going to go a long way in life because he has already learned how to overcome. He knows how to deal with adversity. He knows what it takes to persevere. He knows what it means to go to battle and be strengthened in it. He’s going to be a “strong cup of Joe.”

Hebrews 11:34 says, “Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight.” It is in the battle, during those adverse times, when our weakness gets turned into strength. As we learn the determination to fight, the willingness to stand, the grit to persevere, the Lord makes us strong.

Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight.
