Say Please and Thank You

We are often like that young son who looked at his dad one day and said, “Hey, Dad, I can say please and thank you in Spanish.” His father, unimpressed with what his son had learned at school, responded, “How come you never say it in English?”

If you had been one of the ten lepers who were healed in Luke 17, do you think you would have returned to Jesus to say thank you? I have always wondered if I would be one of the nine who left, or if I would have been the one who came back to express his thanks.

You see, I am still amazed by this story, because this day marked a radical shift in the lives of these men. No longer would they be deemed “unclean” and be avoided by all of society. Now they were free of those labels and the awful illness that suppressed their lives. Yet still, only one of them returned to give thanks.

How often do you stop and thank God for his provision, his protection, and the lack of persecution in your life? The reality is that we could never thank God enough for all that he has done for us. I am certain that there is so much more that we don’t see for which we should be thankful. Yet we have trouble being truly thankful for the blessings we can see and know we have been given.

Luke 17:17 shows us the glory that should be given to the Father. It states, “Jesus asked, ‘Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?’ And Jesus said to the man, ‘Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you.’”

Take the time to give glory to God today for all that he has done for you. What ten things do you know that he has given you from his hand? Write them down, and then thank him for each by name.
