Pornography Is An Intimacy Killer

Pornography Is an Intimacy Killer

In February 2016, former NFL player and Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Terry Crews took to his Facebook page to discuss his long-standing addiction to pornography. Crews was quoted as saying, “For years, years, years, my dirty little secret was that I was addicted to pornography. . . . It really, really messed up my life in a lot of ways.”a At forty-seven, Crews revealed the addiction he’d had since he was twelve years old.

I find it refreshing that a man in his position would openly admit the impact that pornography had on his life. It caused significant pain in his marriage, and reportedly, he and his wife both attended therapy for the challenges the addiction brought them. In an article about his addiction, Crews said, “Every man out there desires intimacy. . . . But the problem is, pornography is an intimacy killer.”b

Some studies indicate that the chemical reactions that take place in a man’s brain while viewing pornographic images are as addictive as cocaine. The only way that I have found that men can get free of this particular addiction is to bring it into the light and seek help. They must then employ safeguards for the rest of their lives.

John 3:21 says, “Those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.” Bringing our lives into the light will enable us to get the help we need to overcome that which has entangled us. Are you addicted to pornography? Share your problem with a pastor, and ask him to help you get the help you need. Get involved with a men’s group that will challenge you and hold you accountable. Put filters on your computer and phone. Live in the light. May you, too, have the courage to stand up against the stronghold of pornography!

Those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.
