More Knee Bend
More Knee Bend
When Tom Brady won his fourth Super Bowl, a note that he wrote to himself was found in his locker. It read, “Bend knees more on drop.” He knew that he needed to throw from a power position, so he repeated to himself over and over again the need for more bend in his knees.
When pundits comment on a quarterback’s throwing ability, they often talk about his arm strength. But arm strength is a myth. Arm strength will take a quarterback only so far. His real power comes from his legs and his core. The power to throw the ball with greater velocity or distance comes from the power generated in the knees through the upper torso. Brady’s note only affirms that.
Isn’t it fascinating that to achieve the greatest success in his profession, Tom Brady is going back to the basics that he learned in seventh or eighth grade? Back in seventh or eighth grade, we were learning all sorts of fundamentals about life. Let’s not forsake that teaching, because it was given to us so that we might be successful.
Proverbs 4:3-4 says, “I, too, was once my father’s son, tenderly loved as my mother’s only child. My father taught me, ‘Take my words to heart. Follow my commands, and you will live.’”
Fundamental things we learned as kids will carry us through our lives. Go back to the basics of being gracious, chivalrous, servant hearted, and hospitable. Don’t forsake the fundamentals.
