I’m Glad I Didn’t Stay in Bed

At eleven years of age, being patient and waiting for a deer to come by is difficult. Even at my age, waiting for a trophy buck can seem very trying. This particular morning was cold. The temperature was in the low thirties, and it was the second day of the hunt. We hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before, and getting out in the cold while being sleepy seemed miserable.

When I went to wake my boys up, Cooper, my youngest son, said, “I’m not going. I’m too tired.” I told him, “Coop, we didn’t come all this way to sleep in. I’m coming back in five minutes.” He said, “Okay,” and then got up with his brother a few minutes later.

We layered up, got to the stands, and began to wait. I was with my older son, Brady, in one stand, and my friend John, our guide and host, was with Coop. It wasn’t long after sunup when Brady and I heard the shot ring out through the crisp morning air. Moments later, we got a picture on my phone of Cooper with his first buck.

Proverbs 6:9 says, “Lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up?” It’s easy to stay in bed, but the reward waits for those who get up and get at it. After we circled up with Cooper and John around his eight-point, Coop said to me, “Dad, I’m glad I didn’t stay in bed.”

Lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up?
