Hurry Up and Slow Down

At eleven years of age, my son Cooper has completed only two or three full rounds of golf. When we have the opportunity to golf together, it is great one-on-one time. He enjoys the game and has the potential to be good, but at this point, he is limited by his lack of patience for the pace of the game.

This lack of maturity leads to some interesting shots. We keep it fun, but often I have to tell him, “Hurry between shots, and slow down for the shot.” Right now, it’s the other way around. He takes all sorts of time getting to the next shot. He laughs, jokes, messes with the dogs in the backyards of homes lining the fairway. But when he gets to his ball, he gets right up on it and fires away.

If we aren’t careful, our spiritual lives can be a lot like Coop’s golf game. When it comes to Scripture reading or prayer, we take our time between shots, but when we get to that important moment to open the Bible and lift our hearts to the Lord in prayer, we fly right through it. We lack the maturity to hurry up between our quiet times and slow down when we get there.

Listen to the words of the psalmist as he writes of slowing down in his time with God. Psalm 119:15 states, “I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.” Remember, hurry to your time with the Lord, and slow down when you get there.
