Home Phone—What’s That?

Do you answer your home phone? Do you even have a home phone any longer? We live in a day and age when nearly everyone in the household has his or her own personal number for a cell phone. Family members who are too young to have their own phones will answer the home phone when it rings, but the rest of us see who it is first via caller ID or simply ignore it, believing it to be a telemarketer. We think, If this is important, they would know to call my cell number. I’m not answering that.

How often do you think we do the same when God is trying to bring us his wisdom? Like the home phone, we ignore it.

Wisdom actively calls to us, and yet we often disregard its call. Even though we have ears to hear, we don’t always want to know the truth, so we avoid it, ignore it, or act as if it isn’t even calling out to us.

The Bible describes an active call that wisdom brings to us. It says in Proverbs 1:20-23:

Wisdom shouts in the streets. She cries out in the public square.

She calls to the crowds along the main street, to those gathered in front of the city gate:

“How long, you simpletons, will you insist on being simpleminded?

How long will you mockers relish your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge?

Come and listen to my counsel. I’ll share my heart with you and make you wise.”

Don’t ignore the wisdom of God. By engaging in the practice of a “proverb a day” by reading a chapter of the book of Proverbs every single day, you will find yourself growing in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.
