I’m having fun coaching my son Brady’s basketball team. We have eight athletes on our team in the Bellaire Parks and Recreation league. It is fun coaching fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds because they are becoming better athletes. Now that the players are older, their basketball IQ has developed, and they are learning to work as a team, looking for ways to break down their opponents.

With the group of athletes I have, I find myself hollering, “Go!” when we get a turnover. The two-three zone defense we play, and the swarming intensity of our defense, has created a lot of turnover opportunities for us. We can outrun anybody, and our depth allows us to stay fresh.

You know, life is fun when you are on a team and you have each other’s backs. It is refreshing to win as a team. The Bible speaks about the power of working together and playing as a team in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12:

“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

Value the team you are on, and work at working well together. When you do, you can really go!
