Don’t Let a Yellow Flag Define Your Season

From peewee football through the pros, yellow flags fly, and tempers flare when someone makes a mistake. Penalties cost an entire team, and it can make for some hard conversations in the moment and after a game. If a coach is not careful, he can fly off the handle and leave a young man feeling like one big mistake. Dads, we have the capacity to do the same thing, don’t we?

The truth of the matter is that we all make mistakes and we all get penalized. Show me a man who thinks he is always right, and I will show you what a fool looks like.

You have probably heard the phrase “God doesn’t make mistakes.” Maybe it’s a special paraphrase of Psalm 139:13-14, which states, “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.”

Remember, God doesn’t make mistakes. Instead, he redeems them. That is the good news of the gospel and one we must model when those on our team or in our home disappoint us. May we learn the important lessons from the mistakes we make, but let us not allow those mistakes to define the quality of our lives! There is nothing like the grace of God. Remember, in the life of the believer, his grace should abound.
